    Aims

The main aim of the Technology Department is to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of design ideas in an ever changing technological world.

    • To prepare pupils for life in ever changing technological society.
    • To develop pupils as problem solvers, either individually or as part of a team.
    • To teach pupils how to use various methods of communicating design ideas and making quality products, therefore developing skills, knowledge and understanding.
    • To make Design and Technology accessible to all pupils of all abilities, through the provision of appropriate delivery of the national curriculum.

    Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 pupils work on a carousel system in which they study the three areas offered at Hillside which are Food Technology, Graphic Products and Resistant Materials. The projects featured in these areas offer our pupils an insight into the design process and how to plan, design and enjoy making a product successfully.

The curriculum is designed to allow pupils to develop their personal, learning and thinking skills through providing a range of learning activities. In Year 7 pupils develop a good understanding of the key concepts in Technology, which they further develop in Years 8 and 9.

    Key Stage 4

Technology is a popular choice at GCSE and many of our pupils gain excellent grades in their final result. We are proud of their success. Past pupils often come back to school to tell us they were also proud of their work and have still kept models many years later. Courses offered at Hillside at Key Stage 4 are Food Technology, Graphic Products and Resistant Materials.

    Enrichment and Extra Curricular Activities

The department has offered a range of activities including:

    • After school S.T.E.M (technology, combined with science, engineering and mathematics) club

    • Saturday Kitchen for GCSE groups
