    Aims

Learning a language is not only enjoyable, it improves a pupil’s cultural awareness, develops their adaptability, makes them more confident and effective communicators and improves their future employability.  Therefore, we are very proud at Hillside to provide every pupil with the opportunity to learn a language.

The main aim of the MFL Department at Hillside is to promote a love of learning foreign languages by exploring new and exciting cultures.

    We also aim to:

    • use a wide range of teaching and learning styles to provide excellent MFL lessons which are fun, challenging and engaging to pupils of all abilities
    • provide a sense of achievement through structured learning and assessment
    • promote tolerance and understanding through better knowledge of other cultures and societies

    Key Stage 3

At Hillside all pupils in Year 7 and 8 study Spanish. In lessons there is great emphasis on speaking, writing, listening and reading using authentic material.  Throughout KS3, pupils are assessed in all four skills and are provided with feedback which is kept in their assessment folders.

    Key Stage 4

All pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 study GCSE Spanish.  GCSE assessment includes exams in Year 11 in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  However, pupils are provided with the opportunity to build on and practise these skills through use of regular assessments which reflect the style of the GCSE exam in Years 9, 10 and 11. The GCSE course provides the grounding for pupils to go on to study A level Spanish.

    Enrichment and Extra Curricular Activities

We have various extra-curricular clubs available to pupils, including, Film club, listening and reading masterclasses and revision classes. In order to motivate and inspire pupils, and thereby support their learning, pupils are also provided with the opportunity to visit our link school in Colegio La Reina in Malaga.
