Asian Dialogue Assembly

Asian Dialogues is an international school partnerships project which includes the UK and 7 Asian countries – Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. It aims to create and encourage dialogues between many different cultures and perspectives.

Hillside have connected with Seoul (Korea) and Kaohsiung(Taiwan).

It is part of our determination to help our students to be well-equipped to live and work in a society that is becoming more and more globalised.

It is also part of our whole school plan to embed school-linking activities within the curriculum and give more pupils the opportunity to work with children in other countries.

In this project the pupils will carry out their research and reporting in the classroom before posting their results on a joint website run by the British Council.

At Hillside this will involve lessons in English, PE and Maths, supported by ICT.

Project Update

Pupils across Year 8 have been making new friends this year – with pupils in Taiwan and South Korea! Through a website called “Asian Dialogues” they have reported on work they have done in English, Maths and PE; they have then been able to talk on a one-to-one basis with individual Asian children about what they have done. The site has strict security and is run by the British Council.

Recently, one year 8 group acted as trailblazers for the rest of the Year by completing the final part of the project for this year. They went to the South Sefton City Learning Centre to do this, but all other classes in the Year will take on the same activity in one of Hillside’s ICT studios.

At SSCLC they researched Asian food and linked it to healthy lifestyles, discussing their findings with each other and talking online to pupils in schools in Taiwan and South Korea. Our Hillside group then created a PowerPoint presentation on “Healthy British Food”. This was uploaded onto the Asian Dialogues website and was viewed by the pupils from our link schools. At the end of the day they all took part in a competition!

It was a really exciting and involving day for our pupils, but one they greatly enjoyed. It was certainly an interactive experience and enabled them to learn so much about Asian life as well as life in the UK. Next it will be the turn of others and then we will all start preparing for what we can do next year with our new friends.
