Comenius Project Communicating through Culture
This is a 3 year multilateral project involving Hillside and link schools in Spain, France, Italy and Slovakia
There are many issues facing young people today in a developing Europe. In our project “Connecting through our Cultures” we address these issues and provide the forum for children in the five different countries to meet each other through electronic communications and work together to share ideas on personal and cultural identities, values and lifestyles.
In an enlarging European Union, many children find themselves living in a country not their own and adapting to a different culture whilst trying to preserve their own heritage.
- What are the issues facing these children today?
- What are their problems?
- What are we doing to help them settle into a new environment and join us in developing a multicultural Europe?
In our project we analyse the new and growing Europe and ask children to describe their own experiences. We communicate through email, online chat, webcam discussions, newsletters and displays. We use our websites as centres of resources for use by all link schools.
We describe our own national identity and our place in the European Union. Many of the children involved are from poor socio-economic backgrounds and many have learning disabilities. This project enables them to communicate with other children across Europe and say what the new Europe means to them and what challenges they face.
