Hillside High School

Excellence in the Heart of the Community

Wade Deacon Trust

    School Library

The school’s large and vibrant library is valued and used by the whole school community; from Year 7 to Year 11, teaching staff and support staff. Throughout the school day, and after lessons have finished pupils and staff can be found making the most of the excellent study and research facilities available as well as taking the opportunity to sit and read the latest fiction.

The library takes pride of place in the centre of the school and is accessed from both the front and back corridors. It has recently been refurbished and is a light and airy space with doors which open onto the quad gardens.

    Stock and Facilities

    The library contains:
    • A wide range of fiction texts which are all reading age graded in line with the Accelerated Reader programme so pupils can choose appropriately challenging books.
    • E-readers and Kindles for pupils who prefer to read on a tablet.
    • Non-fiction texts to help with research and independent study.
    • Magazines, newspapers and foreign language resources.
    • Careers information and university prospectuses (in the bespoke Careers Library).
    • A suite of computers with full Internet access for use within library lessons, at lunchtime and after school.

The library is managed by a full time librarian, Mrs Heritage, and supported by a team of pupil Library Leaders who help out at break, lunch and after school. We also have a Learning Assistant who manages the breakfast study sessions between 8.00am and morning registration.

The school library enjoys a range of uses including:

    • Being a traditional lending library.
    • A bookable classroom resource for teachers who want to use the wealth of research material in their lessons.
    • A ‘library lesson’ classroom for English lessons where pupils can read for pleasure and develop a true love of reading.
    • An independent study area before and after school where pupils can access a range of resources, to help them complete their independent study projects.

The library is an important resource for promoting Teaching & Learning, inclusion and supporting the achievement of all pupils. The library is open before school 7.45am – 8.45am for students Monday to Friday supported by a TA. It is open throughout the day and is busiest at break and lunchtimes. There is also an independent learning club which runs after school Monday to Friday from 2.45pm until 4.00pm with the Librarian on hand to help students.
