Our curriculum is carefully selected and sequenced to ensure pupils learn the most powerful knowledge both academically and to support their personal development. Our curriculum has three core strands and these form the basis of the decisions each Subject Leader makes in terms of what to teach.

We teach our curriculum through the Hillside Core 5. These are a set of five core principles, underpinned by evidence, that support effective learning in the classroom. We expect our pupils to not only understand the importance of these but to embrace them and actively engage with them in each lesson.

As mentioned earlier, the environment is crucial in order to maximise learning. Our Hillside Way core values link back to this by creating a culture which supports effective learning. For example, being late to lessons means minutes lost learning, this not only affects the individual who is late but disrupts the learning of others.

What can families do to help effective learning to continue at home?

As partners in your child's education, we believe that supporting their learning at home is an important aspect of their overall success. There are many simple ways that you can help your child with their learning, even outside of the classroom.

  1. Encourage them to read regularly. Reading is evidenced to be one of the most power indicators of future success. Reading daily is important for us all.
  2. Discuss current events and new ideas. This could be as simple as a looking at current news articles on BBC news or talking about current events.
  3. Provide opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. This does not have to cost money. Liverpool has a wealth of activities completely free of charge. One of our favourites is Liverpool Central Library.
  4. Asking questions and providing positive feedback. Talking to your child about their learning helps to interrupt the Forgetting Curve we referred to earlier.

By working together, we can ensure that your child has the tools and support they need to reach their full potential.
