Physical Education

Strategic Intent for Physical Education

To develop a curriculum which:

  • Is inclusive and diverse that holds fitness and wellbeing at its core focusing on physical, mental and social wellbeing. (With reference to local health data). (Knowledge-led)
  • Provides all pupils to develop physically, emotionally and socially to become well-rounded and confident individuals. (Knowledge-led)
  • Is sequenced that allows pupils to revisit topics each year in KS3 with a different focus in order to develop physical literacy. (Knowledge-led)
  • Develops confidence and resilience through all lessons as well as in extra-curricular activities. (Knowledge-led)
  • Provides a broad understanding of their own health and wellbeing in order to continue being active post-16. (Knowledge-led)
  • Make cross-curricular links through academic talk, developing numeracy skills and broadening their knowledge of anatomy and physiology. (Knowledge-led)
  • Develops ‘sport capital’ and how sport connects with society. (Diverse experiences)
  • Develops career aspirations in the sports industry. (Diverse experiences)
  • Provides a diverse extra-curricular programme. (Diverse experiences)
  • Includes Reading is Power at all stages – Using tier 3 terminology to develop oracy and responses in all lessons. (Reading is Power)

Curriculum Principles

  • We prioritise depth of knowledge - We ensure that all pupils have opportunities in all PE lessons to develop their abilities physically, emotionally and socially. Pupils will recognise gaps in their own health and wellbeing and be provided with the opportunities and knowledge to progress and excel in all areas.
  • Opportunities to develop English and Mathematics in all PE lessons - Oracy – ‘ABC’ responses (Agree with, Build on, Contradict); Time/score-keeping; fitness records/PB; tier 3 terminology for Physical Education.
  • Citizenship - Highlighting local community sports clubs and local sporting excellence. Various athletes in different sports from different countries referred to, and celebrated, in lessons.
  • Careers - Careers within the healthy, leisure and sports industry are highlighted in all lessons to create awareness and to inspire all.
  • We make learning relevant - Linking physical education to individual health and wellbeing and the consequences of sedentary lifestyles.
  • Personal Development - Pupils learn the value of resilience, support and working together to solve common problems through sport/physical activity.
  • We uphold the core principle that, ‘Reading is Power’ - Pupils follow the ‘ABC’ literacy strategy in PE to develop oracy supported by the use of tier 3 words highlighted around the PE department.
  • Cross-curricular links - PE makes relevant links to context and concepts from a wider curriculum;it has natural links with science (Biology/physics in particular), English for extended answer responses (Sport Studies) as well as oracy through reading and spoken word during all KS3 lessons; mathematics for statistical data analysis etc.

Course Content

Key Stage 3 Pathways:

Year 7 Curriculum Focus: Skill development

Year 8 Curriculum Focus: Tactics & strategies

Year 9Curriculum Focus: Analysis & feedback

  • One skills-based lesson per week (Football/netball/badminton/rugby/handball/athletics/basketball/striking & fielding).
  • One health & wellbeing lesson per week (Baseline testing/ Cardiovascular exercise/ Movement & balance/ Coordination).

Key Stage 4 Pathway:

Cambridge Nationals: Sport Science (Certificate)

  • 134 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
  • 200 marks available

R180: Reducing the risk of sports injuries and dealing with common medical conditions (Exam component) 48 GLH, 80 Marks available

This unit is assessed via written exam at the end of Year 11 and pupils will study the content from October-May in Year 11. Pupils will learn how to prepare participants to take part in sport and physical activity in a way which minimises the risk of injuries occurring; prepare them to be able to respond to common injuries that can occur during sport and physical activity and to recognise the symptoms of some common medical conditions.

R181: Applying the principles of training: fitness and how it affects skill performance (Practical & written coursework) 48 GLH, 80 Marks available

This unit will take place throughout September-April in Year 10. In this unit pupils will learn how to conduct a range of fitness tests, what they test and their advantages and disadvantages. Pupils will also learn how to design, plan and evaluate a fitness training programme. This will give pupils the background knowledge they need to be able to plan and deliver appropriate fitness tests, some of which will be adapted to suit the skills of the sporting activity. Pupils will then interpret the data collected from fitness tests and learn how best to feed this back so that participants can go on to make informed decisions about their fitness training.

R182: The body’s response to physical activity and how technology informs this (Practical & written coursework) 24 GLH, 40 Marks available

This unit will be completed between April-October across Year’s 10 and 11. In this unit pupils will learn to understand how both the cardio-respiratory and musculo-skeletal systems provide them with the energy and movements needed to keep them exercising and in turn how exercise helps develop both of these systems.

Enrichment

Extra-curricular clubs: The PE department offer a wide range of enrichment activities four nights a week which aim to broaden our pupil’s experiences of physical activity and sport as well as to develop their physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Our PE teachers are passionate about instilling a lifelong love of physical activity in all of our pupils as well as educating them about the importance of leading, and managing, a healthy, active lifestyle. We recognise our pupils as individuals and, as such, understand that they each have their own interests and passions. To cater for these needs we offer a broad extra-curricular programme including netball, football, badminton, dodgeball, trampoline, athletics, basketball, table tennis and dance.

Fixtures: Across all year groups pupils will have the opportunity to engage in competitive sports across a wide range of leagues, cup competitions and friendly fixtures – Football, netball, basketball, Fusion Dance, cross country, dodgeball and athletics.

Your School Games: We are active members of Your School Games and engage in termly meetings with our School Games Organiser providing our pupils with as many diverse experiences as possible. We compete every half term against our local schools in South Sefton and host a number of these events in our own sports hall as well. These games include a dodgeball league, indoor athletics, girls football tournaments, table tennis tournaments, kinball matches and touch rugby.

Sports Leaders Programme: Another element of the PE departments extra-curricular package includes the Sports Leaders programme. Here, a number of pupils in Year 10 have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through sport and physical activity whilst helping themselves and others stay physically active. They plan and host a number of sports events for pupils in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 and also help with our Year 6 transition. We are very proud of our sports leaders and have a long history of success within the school watching the development of our young people into experienced and confident leaders.

We are extremely proud and fortunate to provide our pupils with such experiences as well as the education to find activities that suit their needs in order to engage in lifelong participation.

Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare

Personal Growth: Sport and physical activity, by its nature, can be competitive, either against others or individually. Our lessons aim to break down barriers and issues caused by mental health, as well as physical challenges. With pupils having opportunities to improve their levels of physical literacy, creativity, problem solving and competitive desire, they will grow as people and be better prepared for the challenges of the world of work or higher education.

Sports Leaders Programme: Our pupils are provided with an opportunity to engage in our Sports Leaders programme in Year 10. Here, pupils play an active role in our broad enrichment programme in which they implement and oversee extra-curricular clubs, alongside their teachers, and work with us in developing provision in our local Primary schools.

Sports Tours: At Hillside High School, we offer two exciting sports tours for pupils (male and female) who consistently display model behaviour and attitudes towards their learning across the whole school community. These tours are designed for pupils to broaden their cultural capital and their life experiences by engaging in opportunities that they may never have access to in their adult lives.

-Our European football tour is a week-long foreign excursion to a top European club (currently Borussia Dortmund) in which our pupils have the opportunity to train with the club’s academy coaches, have a stadium tour, gain cultural capital through city sight-seeing afternoons and are provided with tickets to watch the club play a league game live at their home stadium (Signal Iduna Park).

-Our European netball tour is offered to all pupils (male and female) who also display model behaviour and attitudes towards learning across the whole school community. The netball tour is a week-long foreign excursion to Disney Land Paris in which all pupils have the opportunity to compete in a European netball tournament against schools/clubs from France, Spain, Germany, Holland etc. over a two-day period. On the tour, pupils will stay in a Disney resort, be provided with a one-day pass to all Disney theme parks and will have a group coaching session with England Netball coaches.
